UK and US form new partnership to address AI safety jointly

An MOU has been signed by the US and the UK to promote cooperation in the creation of sophisticated testing for AI models.

Following promises made at the AI Safety Summit in November of last year, this alliance was officially announced on Monday, April 1, 2024, by US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan.

 

The accord highlights a deliberate attempt on the part of both countries to harmonize their scientific approaches and cooperatively improve the assessment procedures for artificial intelligence technologies. The United Kingdom and the United States of America intend to lead a unified approach to AI safety by cooperating on joint testing exercises and promoting expert exchanges between their respective AI Safety Institutes. This project aims to use AI's potential to enhance lives all around the world in addition to risk mitigation.

 

Michelle Donelan, the UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, emphasized the historic significance of this partnership and saw it as a continuation of the "enduring special relationship" between the two nations.
